What did you glean from the Cattle Industry Convention?
Last week Nashville was a buzz with cattlemen from across the country at the annual Cattle Industry Convention. From Cattlemen’s College to the Cattle-Fax Outlook seminar and everything in between, this is a great opportunity to gather ideas and strategies for the year ahead. If you had the chance to attend the convention, we’d like to hear what you learned or what you enjoyed about the event. Just click on the comments button below to share your blog.

This was the first NCBA convention I ever attended. It was an awesome experience! I am on the National Beef Ambassador team this year, so I was able to go for the entire week. My favorite part was listening to Kevin Freiberg at the general session. His speech was just what we as producers need to hear. We need to get passionate about what it is we are doing. And like Kevin said, we need to have fun at it!
I really enjoyed the Trade Show as well, its great to see all the different aspects of the beef industry come together.

Conferences and trade shows are a great way to keep up on industry issues and get ideas to take back to your own operation - not to mention being re-energized for the work that lies ahead. Is anyone making plans to attend an upcoming beef event that looks exciting in March or April?
I just attended a two-day Holistic Resource Management conference in Rapid City last week. It was a thought-provoking seminar. What I walked away from it with is a recognition that wether you’re a beef producer, a business owner, or even a college student, you can apply HRM principles to your life. It’s all about taking the time to analyze and evaluate what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and if there are other opportunities that might fit in with your goals. If any of you have participated in HRM classes and applied them to your operation, I know American Cowman readers would enjoy hearing about them.

I’ve attended a number of National Cattlemen’s Conventions over the past 10 years and it has become a great resource for networking and discussing issues at hand with other producers, industry affiliates and leadership in the organization. You get out of a conference what you put into it and I’m amazed that everytime I attend one, I meet new people that I can network with on educational programs or as a resource. It is also so important to take an active role in creating policy for our industry and working as a team to do so rather than just letting others make policy for us.

I attended the NCBA convention and was very impressed by the positive outlook and forward-looking attitude of the participants I talked to. It seems folks were there to learn about trends and cooperate to build a better industry together. It’s a diverse gathering — all the production sectors. Plus you run into university and government experts, veterinarians, reps from packing and retailing, you name it. I liked the upbeat attitude and the opportunity to learn about better producion methods as well as the wider picture of beef production.
