What “service” do you expect from those breeders who you buy your bulls from?
The bull-sale season is in full swing. Just open up a livestock publication and you’ll find tons of adds offering bulls of every make and model. As a small beef producer, how do you decide who you are going to buy your bulls (and/or replacement females) from? What services do you expect from those breeders? Is there something that a certain breeder does that you’ve been impressed with and it’s made you come back to their bull sale time and again? Or, is there something you wish breeders offered for smaller operations that would earn your business? Share your thoughts and perhaps we will see some registered breeders doing a better job of meeting your needs.

THe Range Ready Program offerred by Boehringer Ingelheim-Vetmedica offers both large and small seedstock producers and replacement heifer developers a health and death benefit program that adds value, minimizes risk to both the supplier and the buyer. I would not buy a bull or replacement female in todays ag economy with out the Range Ready Guarantee backing that animal up!

I am not going to comment on what commercial customers want as a service, because everyone is different. But I will tell you about what our program does as a service. We now have 2 different sales, one in the fall and one in the spring. The fall sale has 18 month old bulls and commercial bred heifers and the spring sale has yearlings and fall born bulls, along with open commercial replacement heifers. By doing this we feel we can fill any ranchers needs for age, sex, and quantity, along with having the quality that is needed to survive.
Now on the service end.
1. We work with several feedlots and order buyers so we can bid on all of our customers calves if they let us know when and where they are selling.
2. You can get a discount on vet supplies through a local company if you are a customer of ours.
3. We will supply our commercial customers with discounted semen if they desire to use one of our bulls.
4. In either one of our sales, our customers are invited to sell their top quality open and bred replacement heifers through them.
5. We keep track of how our customer calves do that we got bought and use it to advertise the next bunch of calves that they sell, and we put all of the history together on all of the cattle we purchase to get fed out and send it to other feedlots and buyers to attract them to other Gill Red Angus sired calves.
By doing all of the things above, we feel we really help our customers out and put more money in their pocket at the end of the day.

My husband and I raise commercial black angus calves for sale. The heifers are out of low bith weight registerd bulls and most would make excellent replacement heifers. We only have 52 calves this year with 12 being registered black angus. With the market flooded with registered bulls we are trying to determine if we want to change to just commercial and still use the registered bulls on our cows. We are not large enough to video. We are weining 650 pound heifers and 698 steers. The calves qualify for all natural, BQA, premises ID and age and source verified. Any suggestions where we go to sell our calves.any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks
